Scene From Space Ball |
I also think of the scene from the Matrix when they were saying that everything taste like chicken, because there were not actually really eating food.
So yes,is that really ______(fill in the blank) that you are eating? The issue is, we do not know for sure. You are almost better off shopping at ALDI (not the fresh stuff) than at ACME because most of the products from ALDI are from Europe. Last I checked GMO is not allowed in food production there. Well, unless, the LOWERED their standards just for us (:-).
Star Trek Voyager - cup of coffee |
Don't get me wrong, I truly like science, I like the advancement of technology. I spend many hours watching Star Trek, there I said it (:-). I like the idea that you can go to the replicator and say what you want and VOILA! a nice plate with roasted chicken and vegetable just materialize in from of you, complete with a fork. I do like that concept. But, is that really food, or just some molecules full with nutrients and vitamins and chicken flavors to fool the brain that it is eating chicken while bombarding the body with overly processed chemicals that are supposedly good for you.
Wait, don't blame the companies, don't blame the scientist, and don't blame the government.
You see, we are part of the problem. When was the last time you went to the store and bought a tomato that has a hole in it, that did not look perfectly round, and did not match ALL the other tomatoes, that had the same size, color, smell, and shape. We as customers, want and only want the best, no blemishes. Do you know how much food stores throw away each day, because it did not match our standards? It is just sad how much we waste. If it is not perfect, we do not want. We all do it, it is our money, so we want the best....what is wrong with that...? This is a society issue, the next generations to come are going to feel the consequences more than we do today.
The other real part of this picture is that the use of GMO became more popular because, it reduces the growth time of the food, it made it available off season, and also now, these food items can be mass produce to meet the growing demands. It also make food accessible and affordable to more people.
So what exactly is GMO - Genetically Modified Organism? It is, let say a tomato, that is altered and the gene level. So basically, that tomato is no longer a tomato by definition. It is well...mutated, if you will, tomato with an animal gene that will help it to stay on the shelf a little longer, or taste better...what would you call it. The problem it is not just tomatoes.
If you are not already aware of GMO, it is not my intention to scare you. Here is couple of tips for you.
1. If you go to the store look for items that is labeled GMO FREE, places like Whole Food and Trader Joe's are a good place to go.
2. Buy Organic
3.Unless these are organic or labeled GMO Free don't buy them; soybean, canola oil, corn, sugar and dairy. Please go to this link for a SHOPPING GUIDE (they ask you to sign up) or try this shopping tips to avoid GMO products.
